DESCRIPTION:Warsaw Ghetto Uprising \nTO WITNESS\, CONSOLE and LAMENT: \nA World Premier Dramatic Reading of Yitshak Katzenelson’s epic powerful work about the Warsaw Ghetto – \nSong of the Massacred Jewish People \n(1943-44) \nדאָס ליד פֿונעם אויסגעהרגעטן ייִדישן פֿאָלק \nIn English and Yiddish \nWith Special Guest Appearance by \nMike Burstyn \nDirected by Jeremy Aluma \nIn-person at the HMLA \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYitshak Katzenelson יצחק קאַצענעלסאָן \nBegun in the Warsaw Jewish ghetto where he was interred with his wife and sons\, the acclaimed Yiddish poet Yitzhak Katzenelson achieved something that has rarely\, if ever\, been achieved: an epic poem composed in hellish circumstances. While Katzenelson perished in Auschwitz soon after\, his requiem miraculously survived. In a masterful recent English translation by Jack Hirschman\, this work gives us an eye-witness account like no other to the depredations of the ghetto and the acts of heroism; a consolation to those who remained; and ultimately\, a lyrical lament for those who did not. \nThis program for the first time brings Katzenelsen’s unprecedented act of spiritual resistance dramatically alive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresented by \nthe Holocaust Museum \nLos Angeles (HMLA) \nin partnership with \nThe California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language \nThis event is free and open to the public. \nRSVP required. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 9\, 2023 3 pm \nEvent Location: \nHMLA \n100 The Grove Drive \nLos Angeles\, CA 90036

SUMMARY:Animation Sings New Life into Once Popular Yiddish Songs
DESCRIPTION: Presented by Jane Peppler\nMusician\, composer\, singer\, translator Jane Peppler has been researching brilliant but forgotten Yiddish theater songs for more than a decade. How\, then\, to get people to listen to these obscure but marvellous songs\, when most people have heard – and loved – only the same 20 Yiddish songs over and over again? Animation was one way to appeal to the casual public. \nHer talk will include video clips of these magically evocative and funny songs as she talks about the people who performed this music in Warsaw between the world wars and how to engage a modern audience. You’ll also hear about the young rhymers hired to write Yiddish versions of American Vaudeville\, Tin Pan Alley and ragtime songs. Their lyrics are a rich reflection of the lives of turn-of-the-century immigrants to New York City. \nIn English\nRegister HERE \nCo-sponsored by the Toronto UJA Committee for Yiddish\nand Der Nister LA \n \n \n \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us as we kick off a special five-part book discussion series focusing on the immigrant experience through the lens of Yiddish literature. The Yiddish Book Center’s “Coming to America” Reading and Discussion program at the LA City Public Libraries aims to engage teens and adults in thinking about immigrants’ experiences when encountering America: In what ways do immigrants change America\, and in what ways does America change immigrants? \nStudio City Branch will host a discussion of Enemies\, a Love Story by Isaac Bashevis Singer on Saturday\, February 29\, 3:30 PM. This event is free and open to the public. \nEnemies\, A Love Story explores a unique love-quadrangle (revolving around one man) grappling with post-Holocaust existence in New York. Singer’s themes of passion\, loyalty\, betrayal\, and disorientation make for a compelling read. \nCopies can be borrowed from the branch or checked out from the library as holdings allow. This book discussion will be facilitated by local Yiddish scholar Miri Koral\, CEO and Founding Director of the California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language. \nFor more information and event location please click here.

SUMMARY:How a Trove of Yiddish Letters Led to a Journey of Discovery
DESCRIPTION:How a Trove of Yiddish Letters Led to a Journey of Discovery\nTalk and Book Signing with Dr. David Slucki\, Ph.D. Q & A with Dr. Holli Levitsky\, Ph.D. \nA year after his father’s untimely death while visiting Los Angeles\, David Slucki\, a native of Melbourne\, Australia\, was handed a cache of Yiddish letters written by his grandfather to a brother in LA after the Holocaust. \nFortunately for David\, he could understand them! \nBecause these 30 years of letters opened up a channel to discovering buried family histories and the keys to understanding David’s own father . They also helped him grapple with the haunting nature of this ancestral history. \nDavid Slucki’s 2019 book\, which will be available for purchase\, Sing This at My Funeral – A Memoir of Fathers and Sons is a unique story and an innovative approach to writing both history and family narrative. \nDavid Slucki is the Loti Smorgon Associate Professor in Contemporary Jewish Life and Culture at the Australian Center for Jewish Civilization\, Monash University. From 2013-2019 he was an assistant professor in Jewish Studies at the College of Charleston\, South Carolina. He is also the author of The International Jewish Labor Bund After 1945. Find out more about him here. \nPortrait: Silvia Wagensberg \nHolli Levitsky is Professor of English and Director of Jewish Studies at Loyolla Marymount University\, LA\, and Affiliated Professor at the University of Haifa. She is also Co-Director of the Jewish American and Holocaust Literature Symposium.

SUMMARY:God of Vengeance\, A Dramatic Reading
DESCRIPTION:The California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language and Wilshire Boulevard Temple present theatre dybbuk’s only dramatic reading of God of Vengeance\, the widely translated\, modernistic\, and oft-revived drama by Sholem Asch that inspired Indecent\, the award-winning Broadway show coming to Los Angeles this June. \nGod of Vengeance depicts a Jewish brothel owner’s efforts to redeem his only child from the sins of her parents\, and is also a surprising (some would argue shocking) coming of age story. \nA dramatic reading of Shalom Asch’s “God of Vengeance” will be performed at Wilshire Boulevard Temple on Sunday\, April 7. \n \nFor more information and to RSVP\, email flori@theatredybbuk.org.

SUMMARY:The Art of Yiddish: Saving a Singular Endangered Language and Culture
DESCRIPTION:Yiddish is the Germanic-based language spoken by most Jews in the world for a millennium and has been the vehicle for an as-yet unparalleled global Jewish artistic expression. But today\, that minority language whose humor\, wisdom and poignancy thoroughly inspired American popular culture\, is in danger of extinction. \nIn this program\, Miri Koral\, Founding Director of the California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language\, will discuss what makes this 1\,000-year-old language so unique and what is being done to safeguard it.

SUMMARY:EK Velt - An Incredible Dream at the Far Reaches of the World
DESCRIPTION:עק װעלט׃ די פֿאַרכאַפּנדיקע מעשׂה\nפֿון ייִדיש אין ביראָבידזשאַן \nPlease join us for the fascinating story of BIROBIDZHAN — a remote and forbidding territory in Russia’s far east\, known as the Jewish Autonomous Region. Was it set up as Stalin’s diabolical or benevolent answer to the “Jewish question”? What has happened to it and its dream of a Yiddish-speaking land since? \nThe only West Coast presentation by very special guest from NYC\, native son and now beloved Yiddish educator\nNikolai (Kolya) Borodulin. \nBirobidzhan has one of the most interesting histories related to Russia and the USSR\, and to Yiddish culture in particular. Known as the Jewish Autonomous Oblast (Region) (JAO)\, it was established in 1928 by Stalin for a host of strategic reasons pertaining to securing the sensitive border with China\, and ostensibly for the benefit of Jews to be “more productive members of society”\, i.e.\, farmers. It has the unique distinction of being\, along with Israel\, one of the world’s two “Jewish territories”. \nThe story of Birobidzhan — its creation\, the rise and fall of the Jewish population and the Yiddish language with it (not always in tandem); its political and social history as relates to the idealistic movements of the 1st half of the 20th Century\, the Stalinist purges\, the Holocaust\, the creation of the State of Israel\, anti-Semitism\, and the collapse of the USSR; and the current situation of Jews and Yiddish culture — provides a fascinating glimpse into a unique political/social/ethnic experiment that is both a colossal failure and a surprising colossal success. \nNikolai\, aka Kolya Borodulin is a post-War native son of Birobidzhan and a product of its Yiddish schools.  His own personal history is a telling depiction of both the struggles for and pride in Jewish and Yiddish cultural identity within the USSR and post-USSR.  By training an educator and scholar\, he is at present one of the most active individuals and innovators in the world in preserving the Yiddish language. \nIn summer of 2018\, Mr. Borodulin returned to Birobidzhan for the first time in 24 years.  He encountered a much-diminished Jewish population but also the continued threads of Yiddish cultural activism\, the same ones that had given rise to streets being named after famous Yiddish writers and Yiddish schools being established at all levels of learning.  The Birobidzhaner Shtern\, the Yiddish-language newspaper initially published in 1930 to cater to newly arriving Jewish immigrants\, still publishes in Russian with two pages per week in Yiddish – the only newspaper in all of Russia with Yiddish content\, and the second only one in the world. \nIn addition to providing a historical overview of this unique region\, Mr. Borodulin’s multi-media lecture will be able to address this history from the personal perspective of one who grew up during its post-War turbulent history within a society that clung at all costs to its minority cultural heritage.  But he will also be bringing us up to date about the current status of population\, culture\, and political trends in the JAO. \nKolya Borodulin is the Master Teacher and Coordinator of Yiddish programming at Workmen’s Circle/ArbeterRing\, New York. He teaches Yiddish language and culture to multigenerational audiences nationally and internationally and is credited with giving hundreds of Yiddishists their foundation in the language. His dynamic style has garnered a growing fan base across the United States and beyond. He is the organizer of Trip to Yiddishland program ( and Yiddish programming coordinator at Klezkanada. Kolya is the author of “Yiddish Year Round – a curriculum for the young beginners” and a number of Yiddish educational materials for children. He also pilots the highly successful Workmen’s Circle online live Yiddish classes “Yidish fun der vaytns”. \nװיפֿל׃\n$18 General; $15 Members; Free FT Students\nFREE PARKING IN ADJACENT LOT (Enter 18th St.)

SUMMARY:A Celebration of Two Yiddish Bards: Mordechai Gebirtig and Chava Alberstein
DESCRIPTION:Mordechai Gebirtig (1877 – 1942) was the most popular and beloved Yiddish songwriter of the 20th Century.  His songs express the heart and soul of each person and at the same time reflect the feelings and striving of the Jewish people as a whole.  So popular were his songs that many were mistaken for folksongs.  Among them are\n\n\nReyzele (Reisl) — about  young love; \nYosl Ber — about joining the army\, and  \nUndzer Shtetl Brent (Our Town is Burning) \n\nThey are by turns tender\, pithy\,  and prescient.\nChava Alberstein is perhaps best known for being the great diva (like Joan Baez) of Israeli popular music.  But during her entire career of performing in Hebrew\, she  also performed and recorded Yiddish songs.  Her most recent forays into Yiddish were composing and arranging original music to the words of famous Yiddish poets.\n \n\nThe beautiful songs of these two outstanding artists will be performed by acclaimed singer Cindy Paley\, accompanied by Miamon Miller (violin)\, Isaac Sadigursky (accordion)\, and Zinovy Goro (clarinet).\n\n \nDON’T MISS THIS WONDERFUL MUSICAL EVENT!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n WHEN:  Sunday\, May 6\, 3 PM\n \nװוּ׃  WHERE:  Santa Monica Synagogue\, 1448 18th St. \nSanta Monica (at Broadway)\n \n\nװיפֿל׃  ADMISSION:  $18 General              $16 Members\n\n\n                   $5   \nFT Students\n\n\n \nFREE PARKING     REFRESHMENTS\n \nRSVP:  ciycl@yiddishi.org      310-745-1190\n\n \nCo-sponsored by the Santa Monica Synagogue\nSupported in part by\nRuth Ziegler Foundation\nBaran Family Foundation\nNurit & Rick Amdur\nWebstation One\nand Friends and Members of CIYCL
