SUMMARY:A Celebration of Two Yiddish Bards: Mordechai Gebirtig and Chava Alberstein
DESCRIPTION:Mordechai Gebirtig (1877 – 1942) was the most popular and beloved Yiddish songwriter of the 20th Century.  His songs express the heart and soul of each person and at the same time reflect the feelings and striving of the Jewish people as a whole.  So popular were his songs that many were mistaken for folksongs.  Among them are\n\n\nReyzele (Reisl) — about  young love; \nYosl Ber — about joining the army\, and  \nUndzer Shtetl Brent (Our Town is Burning) \n\nThey are by turns tender\, pithy\,  and prescient.\nChava Alberstein is perhaps best known for being the great diva (like Joan Baez) of Israeli popular music.  But during her entire career of performing in Hebrew\, she  also performed and recorded Yiddish songs.  Her most recent forays into Yiddish were composing and arranging original music to the words of famous Yiddish poets.\n \n\nThe beautiful songs of these two outstanding artists will be performed by acclaimed singer Cindy Paley\, accompanied by Miamon Miller (violin)\, Isaac Sadigursky (accordion)\, and Zinovy Goro (clarinet).\n\n \nDON’T MISS THIS WONDERFUL MUSICAL EVENT!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n WHEN:  Sunday\, May 6\, 3 PM\n \nװוּ׃  WHERE:  Santa Monica Synagogue\, 1448 18th St. \nSanta Monica (at Broadway)\n \n\nװיפֿל׃  ADMISSION:  $18 General              $16 Members\n\n\n                   $5   \nFT Students\n\n\n \nFREE PARKING     REFRESHMENTS\n \nRSVP:  ciycl@yiddishi.org      310-745-1190\n\n \nCo-sponsored by the Santa Monica Synagogue\nSupported in part by\nRuth Ziegler Foundation\nBaran Family Foundation\nNurit & Rick Amdur\nWebstation One\nand Friends and Members of CIYCL

SUMMARY:Jewish Memory and Yiddish Heritage -- Two Takes: Elie Wiesel and I.B. Singer
DESCRIPTION:Only through memories can the present and past be bridged\, and for Eli Wiesel\, Yiddish is integral in conjuring up the past of Holocaust victims\, Jewish martyrs\, and the glorified religious life of traditional Jews. \nI.B. Singer insists likewise in his Nobel Lecture:\n“(Yiddish) was the tongue of martyrs and saints\, of dreamers and Kabbalists – rich in humor and in memories that mankind may never forget.  In a figurative way\, Yiddish is the wise and humble language of us all\, the idiom of a frightened and hopeful humanity.” \nThese two influential Jewish writers had totally different philosophies.\nDon’t miss this unique and fascinating talk by Prof. Hirose\, one of the world’s leading experts on Jewish literature and I.B. Singer in particular. \n\n\nProf. Yoshiji Hirose is Chairman of the English Dept. at Notre Dame Seishin University in Okayama\, Japan\, and the author recently of Yiddish Tradition and Innovation in Modern Jewish American Writers.  To view his 2016 talk for CIYCL on “The Unsung Japanese Hero Who Saved Thousands of Jews”\, click here. \n\n\n װו      LOCATION:\nSanta Monica Synagogue    \n1448 18th Street    Santa Monica \nװען       WHEN       \n Sunday\, August 13\,   4 – 5:30 PM \n װיפֿל    ADMISSION*:        \n$ 10  General    \n$ 8  CIYCL & SMS Members \nFree to Full-time students \nRefreshments\nFree Parking \nTO RSVP:\nciycl@yiddishi.org\n310-745-1190

SUMMARY:How two Japanese "Schindlers" Rescued 6\,000 Jews
DESCRIPTION:Chiune Sugihara\, as Japanese Consul serving in Kovno\, Lithuania at the onset of WW II\, risked his family\, career\, livelihood\, and life by issuing visas to thousands of Jewish refugees who were then able to flee to Japan\, China\, and numerous other countries in safety. They became known as Sugihara Survivors.\nProf. Setsuzo Kotsuji\, is a lesser-known though just as important a hero. With his intervention\, the Japanese authorities agreed to extend the refugees’ visas several times\, letting them stay for eight months instead of the original two-week period\, thus helping to ensure their lives. \nDrawing on extensive research\, Yiddish and Jewish Literature expert\nProf. Yoshigi Hirose presents fascinating and moving stories about these two Japanese heroes in order to prove that “goodness is ultimately as contagious as evil.”

SUMMARY:Yiddish Avant-Garde to American Mainstream
DESCRIPTION:Boris Aronson\, recipient of six Tony awards for Best Scenic Design\, was one of the most prolific and important artists of the American theater. \nIn exploring Aronson’s journey from the Yiddish theater to Broadway\,\nwe demonstrate some of the many ways in which the Yiddish theater intersected with the mainstream American stage\, leaving a lasting legacy that is still felt in the American theatrical institution to this day. \nBorn in Ukraine\, the son of the Grand Rabbi of Kiev\, Aronson began his stage career in America in 1923\, designing for the avant-garde Yiddish Art Theaters in New York.

SUMMARY:Music of a Vanishing Civilization
DESCRIPTION:The most extraordinary spiritual resistance took place during the darkest times of the Holocaust. \nLyrics and music were written and performed in ghettos\, partisan forests\, and even the camps as a means of expression\, encouragement\, and resistance to inhumanity and annihilation. \nMost of these songs were written in Yiddish\, the language of the vast majority of Eastern European Jews. To sing them\, and hear them\, in the original is to truly honor not only the lost lives but also the civilization that birthed and sustained Jews for centuries — a remarkable and unique civilization that continues to vanish before our eyes.
