DESCRIPTION:A multi-media experience Presented by Dancer\, Choreographer\, Filmmaker \nKAREN GOODMAN \nJoin us for this singular multi-media meditation on S. Ansky and his Dybbuk as related to the beautiful genre of Jewish art dance and the interplay between the weight of the past and its artistic expression in the present. \n \nThe present\, of course\, includes the effects of the current war in Ukraine on Jewish historical identity. \nThe presentation concludes with a viewing of Goodman’s short film Dybbuk Remix: Dancing Between Worlds (2022). Filmed in Kazimierz Dolny\, Poland (where parts of the Yiddish film Der Dibek were shot)\, it features a “beautifully personal and insightful dance performance by Goodman”. The film has been well-received at film festivals and written up in LA Dance Chronicle here.

How\, then\, to get people to listen to these obscure but marvellous songs\, when most people have heard – and loved – only the same 20 Yiddish songs over and over again? Animation was one way to appeal to the casual public. \nHer talk will include video clips of these magically evocative and funny songs as she talks about the people who performed this music in Warsaw between the world wars and how to engage a modern audience. You’ll also hear about the young rhymers hired to write Yiddish versions of American Vaudeville\, Tin Pan Alley and ragtime songs. DESCRIPTION:The great sweeps of Jewish immigration to the Americas in the early 1900s brought with them an epidemic of abandoned wives and children. So much so that the most popular Yiddish paper teamed up with a newly-created Jewish agency to help reunite families. \nA Galeria fun Farshvundene Mener/ A Gallery of Missing Husbands\, which spanned decades\, became a desperate tool for locating runaway guys. She is an award-winning translator from Yiddish to English\, mostly of the work of the Yiddish novelist Chava Rosenfarb. She is currently working on the translation of Rosenfarb’s last novel\, Letters to Abrasha. \nChava Rosenfarb was one of the major Yiddish novelists of the late 20th Century. Her most important work is The Tree of Life: A Trilogy of Life in the Lodz Ghetto. She was also the author of numerous short stories\, essays and three volumes of poetry.

This translation by Yermiyahu Ahron Taub brings the extraordinary memoirs of an important Yiddish writer to English-language readers for the first time. \nYermiyahu Ahron Taub \nYermiyahu Ahron Taub is a poet\, writer\, and Yiddish translator. He is the author of six books of poetry\, including A moyz tsvishn vakldike volkn-kratsers: geklibene yidishe lider/ A Mouse Among Tottering Skyscrapers: Selected Yiddish Poems and two books of fiction\, including Beloved Comrades: a Novel in Stories. \nBella Bryks-Klein \nBella Bryks-Klein is a Yiddish activist in Israel and a researcher and continues her father’s legacy by lecturing the world over in Yiddish\, English and Hebrew. The Yiddish Book Center’s “Coming to America” Reading and Discussion program at the LA City Public Libraries aims to engage teens and adults in thinking about immigrants’ experiences when encountering America: In what ways do immigrants change America\, and in what ways does America change immigrants? \nStudio City Branch will host a discussion of Enemies\, a Love Story by Isaac Bashevis Singer on Saturday\, February 29\, 3:30 PM. This event is free and open to the public. \nEnemies\, A Love Story explores a unique love-quadrangle (revolving around one man) grappling with post-Holocaust existence in New York. They also helped him grapple with the haunting nature of this ancestral history. \nDavid Slucki’s 2019 book\, which will be available for purchase\, Sing This at My Funeral – A Memoir of Fathers and Sons is a unique story and an innovative approach to writing both history and family narrative. \nDavid Slucki is the Loti Smorgon Associate Professor in Contemporary Jewish Life and Culture at the Australian Center for Jewish Civilization\, Monash University. From 2013-2019 he was an assistant professor in Jewish Studies at the College of Charleston\, South Carolina. He is also the author of The International Jewish Labor Bund After 1945. SUMMARY:God of Vengeance\, A Dramatic Reading
DESCRIPTION:The California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language and Wilshire Boulevard Temple present theatre dybbuk’s only dramatic reading of God of Vengeance\, the widely translated\, modernistic\, and oft-revived drama by Sholem Asch that inspired Indecent\, the award-winning Broadway show coming to Los Angeles this June. \nGod of Vengeance depicts a Jewish brothel owner’s efforts to redeem his only child from the sins of her parents\, and is also a surprising (some would argue shocking) coming of age story. \nA dramatic reading of Shalom Asch’s “God of Vengeance” will be performed at Wilshire Boulevard Temple on Sunday\, April 7. \n \nFor more information and to RSVP\, email flori@theatredybbuk.org.

SUMMARY:EK Velt - An Incredible Dream at the Far Reaches of the World
DESCRIPTION:עק װעלט׃ די פֿאַרכאַפּנדיקע מעשׂה\nפֿון ייִדיש אין ביראָבידזשאַן \nPlease join us for the fascinating story of BIROBIDZHAN — a remote and forbidding territory in Russia’s far east\, known as the Jewish Autonomous Region. Was it set up as Stalin’s diabolical or benevolent answer to the “Jewish question”? What has happened to it and its dream of a Yiddish-speaking land since? \nThe only West Coast presentation by very special guest from NYC\, native son and now beloved Yiddish educator\nNikolai (Kolya) Borodulin. \nBirobidzhan has one of the most interesting histories related to Russia and the USSR\, and to Yiddish culture in particular. Known as the Jewish Autonomous Oblast (Region) (JAO)\, it was established in 1928 by Stalin for a host of strategic reasons pertaining to securing the sensitive border with China\, and ostensibly for the benefit of Jews to be “more productive members of society”\, i.e.\, farmers. It has the unique distinction of being\, along with Israel\, one of the world’s two “Jewish territories”. \nThe story of Birobidzhan — its creation\, the rise and fall of the Jewish population and the Yiddish language with it (not always in tandem); its political and social history as relates to the idealistic movements of the 1st half of the 20th Century\, the Stalinist purges\, the Holocaust\, the creation of the State of Israel\, anti-Semitism\, and the collapse of the USSR; and the current situation of Jews and Yiddish culture — provides a fascinating glimpse into a unique political/social/ethnic experiment that is both a colossal failure and a surprising colossal success. \nNikolai\, aka Kolya Borodulin is a post-War native son of Birobidzhan and a product of its Yiddish schools.  His own personal history is a telling depiction of both the struggles for and pride in Jewish and Yiddish cultural identity within the USSR and post-USSR.  By training an educator and scholar\, he is at present one of the most active individuals and innovators in the world in preserving the Yiddish language. \nIn summer of 2018\, Mr. Borodulin returned to Birobidzhan for the first time in 24 years.  He encountered a much-diminished Jewish population but also the continued threads of Yiddish cultural activism\, the same ones that had given rise to streets being named after famous Yiddish writers and Yiddish schools being established at all levels of learning.  The Birobidzhaner Shtern\, the Yiddish-language newspaper initially published in 1930 to cater to newly arriving Jewish immigrants\, still publishes in Russian with two pages per week in Yiddish – the only newspaper in all of Russia with Yiddish content\, and the second only one in the world. \nIn addition to providing a historical overview of this unique region\, Mr. Borodulin’s multi-media lecture will be able to address this history from the personal perspective of one who grew up during its post-War turbulent history within a society that clung at all costs to its minority cultural heritage.  But he will also be bringing us up to date about the current status of population\, culture\, and political trends in the JAO. \nKolya Borodulin is the Master Teacher and Coordinator of Yiddish programming at Workmen’s Circle/ArbeterRing\, New York. He teaches Yiddish language and culture to multigenerational audiences nationally and internationally and is credited with giving hundreds of Yiddishists their foundation in the language. His dynamic style has garnered a growing fan base across the United States and beyond. He is the organizer of Trip to Yiddishland program ( and Yiddish programming coordinator at Klezkanada. Kolya is the author of “Yiddish Year Round – a curriculum for the young beginners” and a number of Yiddish educational materials for children.
