SUMMARY:Three Nights. Three Concerts. Celebrating the Renewal of Jewish Life in Poland.
DESCRIPTION:October 19 (Temple Aliyah\, Woodland Hills)\nOctober 22 (Torrance Cultural Arts Center)\nOctober 23 (Temple Beth Israel\, Pomona) \nJewish Renewal in Poland is proud to present three concert events in the Los Angeles area featuring Cantor and Holocaust survivor David S. Wisnia accompanied by his grandson Avi Wisnia\, with contemporary Polish cantors Rivka Foremniak and Menachem Mirski. The concerts will benefit the work of the Friends of Jewish Renewal in Poland.  \nAbout The Program: \nThe concerts will showcase Cantor David S. Wisnia\, a 90-year-old survivor of the Auschwitz Concentration Camp. As a Polish youth\, Wisnia sang in the famed Tlumacke Synagogue with renown Cantors Gershon Serota and Moshe Kussovitsky. He continued to use his voice during World War II and his internment in Auschwitz\, leading to his ultimate survival. Wisnia’s broad ranging repertoire connects Poland’s Jewish musical past with the country’s current emerging moment of Jewish renewal. (www.onevoicetwolives.com) \nDavid Wisnia’s grandson\, singer-songwriter Avi Wisnia\, will accompany his grandfather during the concerts as well as perform his own original music\, with influences ranging from liturgy to contemporary jazz (www.aviwisnia.com)\, keeping the Jewish musical tradition alive\, from generation to generation. During the program\, the Wisnias will also recount their recent travels to Poland\, performing in Warsaw\, and teaching at Beit Warszawa. http://rabbibeliakblog.org/david-wisnia-88-child-prodigy-auschwitz-survivor-cantor-joined-by-grandson-avi/  \nThe program also features Rivka Foremniak and Menachem Mirski\, popular prayer leaders in Beit Polska’s community of lay cantors. The two visitors from Warsaw and Gdansk\, respectively\, are among the ten prayer leaders trained by the lay cantor’s program originated by Princess Irina zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (http://rabbibeliakblog.org/lay-prayer-leaders-shatzcantor-development/). Menachem Mirski’s musical repertoire includes cantorial music as well as a unique niche of Polish-Jewish Klezmer music. \nHazzan Michael Stein of Temple Aliyah in Woodland Hills is the director of the lay cantor’s program\, having visited Poland twice recently to teach. Stein is one of the producers of a new posthumous album of Theodore Bikel’s music and wisdom\, While I’m Here. The late Theodore Bikel was an animating spirit in Jewish Renewal in Poland. These concerts will also celebrate the release of this album. \n(http://www.jewishrenewalinpoland.org/programs/prayerleaders/) (http://rabbibeliakblog.org/concert-of-mike-stein-beit-warszawa/) \nCantor Paul Buch is an ordained cantor and the leader of Temple Beth Israel of Pomona’s musical life. His music brings joy to the Pomona and San Gabriel Valleys where he hosts Jewish musical events for the entire community and leads worship. Temple Beth Israel is the first congregation to twin with Beit Warszawa. (http://rabbibeliakblog.org/twinning/). \nEthnomusicologist Neal Brostoff has been active in teaching the lay cantors and arranging the three benefit concerts and the program notes. Additional musical support at the performances will be provided by instrumentalists from the UCLA undergraduate jazz program and the Thelonious Monk Institute. \nConcerts Sponsored by: Jewish Renewal in Poland/Beit Polska\, Temple Aliyah of Woodland Hills\, Torrance Cultural Arts Center\, Temple Beth Israel of Pomona\, and the UCLA Mickey Katz Endowed Chair in Jewish Music \nAbout Jewish Renewal in Poland: \nWe are fostering a vibrant renewal of Judaism in Poland. Working together\, the Friends of Jewish Renewal in Poland along with the World Union for Progressive Judaism and the European Union for Progressive Judaism are opening the doors of Judaism to many of Poland’s estimated 200\,000 potential Jews and building the framework for renewed religious life. Our outreach programs focus on educating individuals and helping them build Progressive religious communities\, or havurot\, which are incipient congregations. So far we have established havurot in numerous Polish cities. Some are on their way to becoming congregations. Jewish Renewal in Poland embraces continuity with the Jewish past in Poland. \nTickets & Concert Information: \nOctober 19 at Temple Aliyah\n6025 Valley Circle Blvd.\, Woodland Hills\, CA 91367\njewishpolandandconcertaliyah.eventbrite.com \nOctober 22 at Torrance Cultural Arts Center\n3330 Civic Center Drive\, Torrance\, CA 90503\n310-781-7171 or www.torrancearts.org \nOctober 23 at Temple Beth Israel\n3033 Towne Ave. Pomona\, CA 91767\nJewishpolandconcerttbi.eventbrite.com

SUMMARY:Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholom Aleichem
DESCRIPTION:A special invitation to the first theatrical screening of Theodore Bikel’s highly acclaimed film\n“To be with him is to be in the presence of greatness.”-Ed Asner \nTheodore Bikel had a magnificent career that spanned over 75 years in show business. Few garnered such distinguished recognition in music\, film\, literature\, and stage. Theo’s latest\, and last\, film\, called “Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholom Aleichem\,” will be showing simultaneously at four Laemmle Theatres in Los Angeles on Oct 19th at 7:30 PM and on Oct 20th at 1pm\, with a special screening\, dedicated to this legendary thespian on Oct 19th at 7:30 pm at the newly reopened Laemmle Ahrya (previously the Fine Arts) in Beverly Hills. The evening will serve as the first public memorial for Theo\, with special greetings and a chance to raise a glass and toast Theo during a post screening reception. \nTheo considered this autobiographical film\, which has been showing with great success at film festivals in the US and abroad\, to be his crowning achievement. Please join Theo’s colleagues and the theatre community for a memorable experience. \nWHEN: Oct 19th at 7:30pm \nWHERE: The new Laemmle Ahrya (previously the Fine Arts)\, 8556 Wilshire Blvd\, Beverly Hills\, CA 90211 (near Robertson) – 310659-9171 \nTICKETS: For tickets ($10\, $12\, $15)\, additional locations and times\, visit http://www.laemmle.com/films/39526 \n“Theodore Bikel: In the Shoes of Sholom Aleichem” combines Bikel’s charismatic storytelling and masterful performances with a broader exploration of Shalom Aleichem’s remarkable life and work. \nA pioneer of modern Jewish literature who championed and luxuriated in the Yiddish language\, Sholom Aleichem created dozens of indelible characters. His Tevye the Milkman\, Motl the Cantor’s Son\, and Menachem Mendl–“shtetl Jews” for whom humor and pathos were two sides of the same Yiddish coin–remain invaluable windows into pre-war Eastern European Jewish life\, real and imagined. Portraits of two beloved icons–Sholom Aleichem and Theodore Bikel–are woven together in this enchanting new documentary. The two men have much in common: wit\, wisdom and talent\, all infused with deep humanity and Yiddishkeit. \nFor more information about Theodore Bikel\, please visit: http://www.bikel.com

SUMMARY:How two Japanese "Schindlers" Rescued 6\,000 Jews
DESCRIPTION:Chiune Sugihara\, as Japanese Consul serving in Kovno\, Lithuania at the onset of WW II\, risked his family\, career\, livelihood\, and life by issuing visas to thousands of Jewish refugees who were then able to flee to Japan\, China\, and numerous other countries in safety. They became known as Sugihara Survivors.\nProf. Setsuzo Kotsuji\, is a lesser-known though just as important a hero. With his intervention\, the Japanese authorities agreed to extend the refugees’ visas several times\, letting them stay for eight months instead of the original two-week period\, thus helping to ensure their lives. \nDrawing on extensive research\, Yiddish and Jewish Literature expert\nProf. Yoshigi Hirose presents fascinating and moving stories about these two Japanese heroes in order to prove that “goodness is ultimately as contagious as evil.”

SUMMARY:Yiddish Avant-Garde to American Mainstream
DESCRIPTION:Boris Aronson\, recipient of six Tony awards for Best Scenic Design\, was one of the most prolific and important artists of the American theater. \nIn exploring Aronson’s journey from the Yiddish theater to Broadway\,\nwe demonstrate some of the many ways in which the Yiddish theater intersected with the mainstream American stage\, leaving a lasting legacy that is still felt in the American theatrical institution to this day. \nBorn in Ukraine\, the son of the Grand Rabbi of Kiev\, Aronson began his stage career in America in 1923\, designing for the avant-garde Yiddish Art Theaters in New York.

SUMMARY:Music of a Vanishing Civilization
DESCRIPTION:The most extraordinary spiritual resistance took place during the darkest times of the Holocaust. \nLyrics and music were written and performed in ghettos\, partisan forests\, and even the camps as a means of expression\, encouragement\, and resistance to inhumanity and annihilation. \nMost of these songs were written in Yiddish\, the language of the vast majority of Eastern European Jews. To sing them\, and hear them\, in the original is to truly honor not only the lost lives but also the civilization that birthed and sustained Jews for centuries — a remarkable and unique civilization that continues to vanish before our eyes.
